When a friend invited me to a “traditional Brazilian party”, the Festa Junina, I expected to find something like carnival, but I was instead introduced to a colourful, playful mixture of Brazilian flavours that I had not seen before.

“In your opinion, which is the biggest festival in Brazil?”, asked me Paula Daunt, one of the founders and organizers of Festa Junina Berlin. She answered her own question before I could even open my mouth: “Yes, it’s the Festa Junina! We celebrate it in the whole of Brazil every year, during the month of June, but very few people know this tradition outside Brazil. We dress up like countryside people, in patched up clothes, also wearing straw hats, fake freckles and piggy tails. We spend the whole day playing silly games, drinking, eating and dancing.”

And that is exactly what we did. As soon as I arrived and grabbed myself a caipirinha, a cute Brazilian girl dressed in the most colourful dress I have ever seen, cheerfully invited me to take part in the next game. “The mummy game will start in 2 minutes. You need a partner. Grab that roll of toilet paper if you are up for it. The first person to completely wrap his or her partner in toilet paper will be the winner.”, said Winny.

I confess I needed one or two more caipirinhas to be able to wrap someone in toilet paper, so I decided to stay out of that round, but watching people do it was hilarious! After about one minute of mayhem, and a loud voting process, we had a few half-wrapped mummies and one democratically elected winner, completely wrapped in toilet paper. After that their played the internationally known chair-dance, three-legged-races, tug of war, “balloon explosions”, and several other games that I could not really identify, but they seemed to be having a hell of a good time.

I must say my favourite game was definitely the “correio elegante”, or “cheeky mail”. The cheeky mail messengers spent the whole duration of the party delivering anonymous messages to people, sometimes accompanied by little sweets and presents. If you are interested in someone, that is definitely the way to go. “The hardest part of my job is to deliver the message without letting the recipient know who sent it. Sometimes they really insist on knowing who sent it, but this is the most important part of this game: secrecy” says Sarah Machado, the responsible for cheeky mail girls.

One element that is always a central point in any Brazilian gathering is the music, and that would not be different at Festa Junina. Beside the usual exceptionally groovy Brazilian sounds, mainly from the 60s and 70s, the Festa Junina DJs and bands play a lot of Forró, the traditional genre played in all Festa Junina parties in the northeast of Brazil. A traditional Forró band is composed of a combination of three instruments (accordion, zabumba and a metal triangle). Forró is danced in pairs, usually very close together, with the man’s left hand holding the woman’s right hand as in the Waltz, with the woman – and occasionally the man – being spun in various ways, although it’s not essential to spin at all.

After dancing a little Forró, and having one too many caipirinhas, I decided to stuff myself with the traditional Festa Junina food. The several different stalls sold all kinds of rich sweets, cakes and pastries, some made with corn, rice, tapioca, cassava, and all the things Brazilians have available at the beginning of winter, when they celebrate the festival. My favourite was definitely the Canjica, a type of fresh corn pudding, and also the cinnamon rice pudding. Delicious!!

After listening to so many different stories, having my eyes, ears, stomach, mind and body catered for, I was ready to go home, happy to have attended the party. It was 10 in the evening, and before I managed to put my coat on, a Brazilian girl comes to me and asks me loudly “hey, where are you going? aren’t you coming to the party?” Coming to the party? I ask. I thought we already had a party! She says with a cheeky smile on her face “yes, but the second part starts now. We are in Berlin so now we need to celebrate like Berliners do. We have 4 floors of electronic music from now util tomorrow morning. I don’t think you should miss that.”

I have a look at the line up and quickly understand what she means, while she talks a little bit about the lineup for 2012. “We have Voodoohop coming straight from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Voodoohop is a blended mix of the new Brazilian talent brought to Europe by Sonar Festival. The core of Voodoohop is crafty musician Psilosamples and the djing skills of Thomash, a crazy german scientist who settled in Sao Paulo and created Voodoohop. They joined forces with the most creative and exhuberant performers, video artists & dancers of São Paulo. Together created a synesthetic show working like a tropical cabaret : the music unites with lights, decoration and projections, performers and dancers contaminate the public. Be prepared for glitter showers and sound explosions! Their musical style is defined by the tropical psychedelia of Brazil, experimental avant-garde electronica and the hypnotizing groove of samba.”

From 22:00 onwards, Festa Junina and Robot Army (robotarmy.de) unite forces to keep the party going until they reach the 24 hour mark.

DeadFader will be celebrating his record release on Robot Elephant Records, and playing a killer live set, followed by a most awaited Ancient Methods Dj set, the Robots Herr Schneider, Kriek and Baeks, business as usual, some quality rave/breaks/old school with DJ Controlled Weirdness, the seizure inducing set of Killerbomb, DJ Moocha and his fresh UK sounds, Huron, Axiom and Coan with some proper experimental shit, Sigma and her untouchable mixing skills, Lower Order Ethics and her deep, heavy, maverick selection of techno and industrial, Paula Daunt live with an ethereal, noisy live act (think Tim Hecker when he was 5 years old), and Projekt Gestalten coming all the way from Brazil mixing several styles live. Here’s the lineup for 2012 in case you have the energy to party for 24 hours with those mad Brazilians.

The dj and creator of the Voodoohop Party in São Paulo, in exile in the country of Samba, absorbed all kind of music like a sponge and transforms them in his mixes, blurring the frontier of styles and bpms.

After getting a degree in Artificial Intelligence, it didn’t take long for Thomash to start playing around with new programs like Live and quickly develop his own way of mixing music. Characterized by tropical beats, irresistible groove and layers of synths, Thomash’s music represents the perfect fusion between his country of origin, germany and Brasil. His style can be described as an unpretentious mix between krautrock, samba, eletronica and psychedelia.

He has already performed all over Brasil and last year played at the prestigious Melt! Festival in Germany. He is currently working on a Dj residency project at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo and including others his remix “To burn or not to burn” from Arnaldo Baptista (Os Mutantes) was released recently on compilation by D-Edge music label.

Tati performed at Fusion Festival, Glade Festival, Boom Festival, Bar 25, Arena Club, Dedge Club (Brazil) and many others. At festa Junina she will play with Polly Phone, a talented German Dj whom she has been working with for some time now, promising us a “creative and unpredictable back to back dj set”. We’re looking forward to it, Tati! Let’s get to know her better.

Festa Junina Berlin: How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?

FJB: What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of music?

FJB: What come to your mind when you hear “Brazil” or “Festa Junina”?
TS: Music, warm vibes, fun, good food and drinks, nice people.

FJB: What is love?
TS: Sharing – Living – Feeling – Believing – Smiling – Crying – Dissolving

Yes, we’re talking about Mark Hawkins, this acclaimed Dj and producer who took over dance floors worldwide with his cult 2001 Djax Up Beats debut “Ctrl Alt Delete”. Fusing raw Chicago styled beats with melancholic synth melodies in an abrasive fashion, Mark has been headlining parties all over Europe, from UK to Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, discovering many previously unknown scenes, events, Djs and producers. We are seriously excited to hear his live set at Festa Junina Berlin 2011. Check out his awesome website for more news about him and lots of cool mixes from various talented people at http://signalsfromsouthwark.com/ This is what he’s got to say:

Festa Junina Berlin: Who are you?

Mark Hawkins: I make music I like, influenced by sounds from the mid 90s coming out of Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Paris, Eindhoven and many other places. I made records for Djax and Mosquito. I played in a lot of different clubs around the world, but this isn’t important to what I do right now. The moment is important, and making good music right now is important, much more important that any “Claims to fame” I might have.’

FJB: What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of music?

MH: Making it the centre of my life was probably the craziest thing I ever did for music, because it can mess with everything when you’re in that situation, your finances, your relationships, everything. Luckily I have now found an equilibrium, so these things aren’t so much of a problem. Getting into cars with random strangers and feeling lucky to still be alive just to get to the gig, and dealing with strange wannabee Ukranian gangster types probably also ranks up there quite highly!

FJB: We are taking you to a desert island now, but only for the weekend. What CD/vinyl are you taking with you?
MH: Com Truise’s new album which comes out next month.
FJB: YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

FJB: What is your favourite movie quote?
MH: ‘We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60′s. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary’s trip. He crashed around America selling “consciousness expansion” without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously… All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create… a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody… or at least some force – is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.’

FJB: What is love?
MH: Being able to be totally yourself with your partner, shedding a tear to some part of a film or music.. stuff like that
FJB:

FJB: What tune will kick ass at the Festa Junina Berlin 2011?
We really think he is a classic Festa Junina DJ: bubbly, sunny, eclectic and skillful! He will be the one in charge of moving everyone from the garden to the dance floor at the end of the day, and we are pretty sure it is gonna be an easy task for this German DJ who’s been playing electronic music with influences of jazz, funk, disco & soul for more than 18 years! He calls it “boogie-afro-jazz-tech-house”. Fobia is already pretty well known in the Breakcore/noise scene but this time she is paring up with Flipmatic to play a dub techno, back to back set. Yes, Fobia will slow it down a bit, but it will be still pretty fast and groovy for us! Let us get to know this lady a bit better.

Festa Junina Berlin: We are taking you to a desert island now, but only for the weekend. What CD/vinyl are you taking with you?
Fobia: A made specially for this trip “Best of Mike Patton” Compilation.
Festa: Yessssss!!!

FJB: How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?
F: Noisy, Intense, Experimental, Chaotic.

FJB: Who are you?
F: I am Fobia, a brazilian djane, producer, sound engineer, samurai influenced freak! I love crazy broken fast breaks and a lot of chaotic noise! I´m the kind of girl who lies down on the dance floor, closes her eyes and lets the music take her through the most beautiful and intense journeys. On the other hand I am also very effective and down on earth when I am working on band recordings and mixdowns. But no matter in which state I´m in, I can definitely say that I am a music addict and nothing (well almost nothing gives me this incredible feeling – where the world is in the right place and I can just let go and enjoy the great energy around me – like music does!

FJB: Is the bottle half full or half empty?
F: Half FULL

FJB: What is your favourite movie quote?
F: Seven Samurai: Kambei Shimada: Danger always strikes when everything seems fine.

FJB: What tune will kick ass at the Festa Junina Berlin 2011? Annos Woland “The Road” BlueCode rec 009
